The TOURAL integrated tourism model introduces a forward-looking approach to tourism development, aiming to promote smart, sustainable, and balanced growth across Europe’s rural, remote, and island destinations. Built around the concept of UCCST tourism (Underwater, Cultural, Creative, Science, and Silver Tourism), the model supports multi-dimensional and participatory tourism experiences while strengthening local value chains through cross-regional cooperation.
Within this framework, Knowledge Awareness Centers (KACs) play a central role. At least one KAC is planned to operate in each participating region, functioning as a regional hub for the promotion of UCCST tourism verticals. These centers combine education, awareness, and visitor engagement, offering both residents and visitors access to innovative tourism narratives rooted in local heritage and identity.
In the case of the Northern Sporades, where a KAC already existed, the structure was renovated and further enhanced with digital elements and VR experiences, focusing on Underwater Cultural and Natural Heritage Tourism (UCNHT), Cultural and Creative Tourism (CCT), Cultural Science Tourism (CST), and Silver Tourism (SLT). In addition, small-scale implementations of the UCCST model will be carried out through selected tourism services.
The Alonissos Knowledge Awareness Centre (KAC) is designed as an exhibition and information hub that combines advanced digital technologies with traditional museum practices, with a special focus on local Underwater Cultural Heritage. Operated by the Municipality of Alonissos, its main purpose is to inform and engage visitors in underwater archaeology. In summer 2025, the KAC was renovated as part of the TOURAL project and opened its doors to the ART4SEA exhibition, emphasizing the island’s cultural and creative initiatives.
