TOURAL Raises Environmental Awareness Through Citizen Science Event in the Kutsurub Community

On 12 May 2026, TOURAL partners Diana Krysinska, Inna Tymchenko, and Mykola Hrubyi participated in a community outreach event dedicated to environmental awareness and citizen science initiatives in the Kutsurub territorial community, Ukraine. The TOURAL Project was represented with a dedicated information stand and an interactive educational programme focused on plastic pollution and sustainable environmental practices.

The event brought together young people and local residents to explore an important question: Why is it important not to throw plastic in the trash? Through engaging presentations and discussions, participants learned about the history of plastic, how oil and gas are transformed into plastic products, the formation of ocean garbage patches, the dangers of microplastics, and the impact of plastic waste on wildlife and ecosystems. The session also highlighted the principles of ecological consumption and demonstrated how small everyday actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.

In addition to raising awareness about plastic pollution, the event introduced participants to the concept of citizen science and its role in improving community well-being and protecting natural and cultural heritage. Attendees had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern environmental monitoring equipment used to assess water and air quality, encouraging active participation in local environmental stewardship.

A further highlight of the initiative was the installation of a dedicated plastic waste collection point in the centre of Kutsurub. Designed as a biopositive art object, this installation promotes responsible waste management while serving as a visible symbol of environmental engagement within the community.

Through activities such as this, TOURAL continues to strengthen environmental awareness, foster citizen participation, and support sustainable development across rural and remote communities, demonstrating how local actions can contribute to broader environmental and societal goals.
